Extracting Topographic Features for Outdoor Mobile Robots

چکیده
Some applications such as the autonomous navigation in natural terrain and the automation of map making process require high-level scene descriptions as well as geometrical representation of the natural terrain environments. In this paper, we present methods for building high level terrain descriptions, referred as topographic maps, by extracting terrain features like "peaks", "pits", "ridges", and "ravines" from the contour map. The resulting topographic map contains the location and type of terrain features as well as the ground topography. We develop new definitions for those topographic features based on the contour map. We build a contour map from an elevation map and generate the connectivity tree of all regions separated by the contours. We use this connectivity tree, called Topographic Change Tree, to extract the topographic features. Experimental results on a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) supports our definitions for topographic features and the approach.

Doors are a significant object for the visually impaired and robots to enter and exit buildings. Although the accuracy of door detection is reported high in indoor scenes, it has become a difficult problem in outdoor scenes in computer vision. The reason may lie in the fact that such properties of a simple ordinary door such as handles, corners, and the gap between the door and the ground may n...
متن کاملLearning Object Models on a Robot using Visual Context and Appearance Cues
Visual object recognition is an important challenge to widespread deployment of mobile robots in real-world domains characterized by partial observability and unforeseen dynamic changes. This paper describes an algorithm that enables robots to use motion cues to identify (and focus on) a set of interesting objects, automatically extracting appearance-based and contextual cues from a small numbe...
متن کاملHolistic methods for visual navigation of mobile robots in outdoor environments
Encouraged by the growing market of self-driving cars, the research interest in the field of visual navigation in outdoor environments strongly increases. Even though recent development shows that in the near future road transport may drastically change, it conceals that these developments are restricted to a limited class of visual navigation problems. Methods which show reliable performance t...
متن کاملExperimental Analysis for Measuring Errors in Wheeled Mobile Robots (RESEARCH NOTE)
This paper presents experimental analysis of wheeled mobile robots. Mathematical modelling of the mobile robot is presented. The mobile robots consist of an omni-directional and three differential drive mobile robots are tested and moved in given trajectories and the systematic errors of the robots are determined. A new method for omni-direction mobile robot was introduced in which the robot wa...
